How to win clients

Clients hire you to reduce risk. They do not hire you for a long list of tools. Show that you understand the problem. Then show a small result.

Before the call

  1. Write the problem in one sentence.
  2. Write the user who feels that problem.
  3. Write one outcome you can ship in a short time.
  4. Prepare one question you still need to ask.
  5. Open with that sentence. Do not open with your stack.

During the call

Listen first. Repeat the problem in your own words. Ask if that is correct. Then propose a first slice of work. A first slice is a result the client can see, not a plan.

Do not promise a full platform on day one. Promise a check that proves the idea works.

After the call

Send a short note the same day.

  1. Restate the problem.
  2. Restate the first slice.
  3. State the date for the first check.
  4. State what you need from them.

If they do not reply, send one follow-up. Then stop. More messages do not create trust.

Check

You won the work when the client agrees to a first slice and a date. A vague "let us stay in touch" is not a win.
